Thu 5/10

I posted several more essay prompts for you to review. Go to “AP Essays” tab above and download item #11.

Wed 5/9

Some stunning developments in American politics in the last few days. Yesterday, long time Senator Richard Lugar (R-Indiana) was defeated in his primary bid for re-election by an upcoming Republican challenger. Senator Lugar is a well-known statesman of the U.S. Senate, having served in this body for 30 years! You can read his goodbye letter here and learn more about the moving forces (partisanship, anti-incumbency, PACs, Super PACs, etc.) shaping American politics today.

A valuable lesson on direct democracy — voters (not the state legislature or judges) in North Carolina overwhelmingly approved a state constitutional amendment to ban gay marriage in that state! You have learned that an amendment to the North Carolina Constitution becomes the supreme law of that state (same as an amendment to the U.S. Constitution), thus effectively taking the issue of gay marriage out of the hand of the courts and the state legislature.

A note about Open Primary, Closed Primary and Blanket Primary:

In classic closed primary, a Democratic voter receives a Democratic ballot, a Republican voter receives a Republican ballot, and so forth. In an open primary, a voter may request a ballot from any political party, regardless as to his or her personal party affiliation. In a blanket primary, a voter receives a general “blanket” ballot which allows him or her to vote for any candidate from any party. This would allow a voter to support a Libertarian candidate for President while simultaneously voicing preference for a Peace and Freedom Gubernatorial candidate, for example.

The blanket primary is a natural extension of the open primary system, but very few states use it.There are some distinct disadvantages to an open primary. It is not uncommon for voters from one party to request the ballot of an opposing party and vote for the weakest candidate, in the hopes of nominating that weaker candidate to the race for office. An open primary also allows voters to easily defect from their stated party affiliation. However, independents and people who have no party affiliation appreciate the open primary, as it allows them to participate in the democratic process without allying themselves to a particular political party.

Can you answer this AP Essay question? Supreme Court decisions often generate considerable controversy and disagreement between Democrats and Republicans, conservatives and liberals, those who favor judicial restraint and those who favor judicial activism, etc.

a. Supreme Court justices are expected not to decide cases based on their own political opinions. Name three things on which judicial decisions are supposed to be based. Briefly describe each of these and explain how it guides decisions.

b. Explain the difference between judicial activism and judicial restraint.

c. Describe one Supreme Court decision that is an example of judicial activism and explain why it is an example of judicial activism. Explain the legal basis upon which the Court based its decision.

d. Describe one Supreme Court decision that is an example of judicial restraint and explain why it is an example of judicial restraint. Explain the legal basis upon which the Court based its decision.

Mon 5/7

Review the Quizlets for 11-13

Essay #23, #24 due today

The 2011 episode of Cram for the AP Government Exam is here as well as the 2010 episode and the 2009 episode.

- Instead of essay questions on the test, I have decided to let you write the essay at home. It will be due Thu 3/15. Please choose one from the three prompts below and write a minimum one and a half page essay:

2) Identify the various types of speech (at least 4 types) and explain how each type is protected by the Constitution. Cite examples of court cases that have helped to establish these protections.

3) What is meant by the “right to privacy”? Explain the controversies (over three separate issues of privacy) that have arisen over this right.

- The answers to the multiple-choice questions on your Chapter 4 Outline is here. If you want to review the online flash cards for Chapter 4, it is available here.
